Printer & Scanner Setup
Most all-in-one printers scan as well as print, but the scan side often needs its own setup step. Here's how to get it working properly.
Setting Up Your Scanner
- Install the full driver package, not just the print driver. Some installers separate print and scan software — make sure both are included.
- Choose a default save location. Set where scanned files land by default so you're not hunting for them afterward.
- Pick a file format. PDF works well for documents; JPEG or TIFF suit photos and images better, depending on what you scan most.
- Test the scan-to-computer feature. On network printers, this usually needs to be enabled specifically, separate from print sharing.
- Set up scan-to-email or scan-to-phone if needed. Many printers can send a scan straight to an inbox or a mobile app without a computer involved at all.
Common Scanning Issues
Scanner Not Found
If the printer prints fine but won't scan, the scan driver may not have installed — reinstalling the full software package usually fixes it.
Scans Going to the Wrong Folder
Check the default save location in your scanning software — it's easy to lose scans in a folder you forgot you set.
Blurry or Low-Quality Scans
Increase the scan resolution (measured in DPI) for documents with small text or for anything you plan to print again later.
Common Questions
- Can I scan without a computer turned on?
- On most network and wireless models, yes — scan-to-email, scan-to-USB, and scan-to-app features work independently of a connected computer.
- What resolution should I scan documents at?
- 300 DPI is a good general setting for text documents; photos and images intended for reprinting usually benefit from 600 DPI or higher.
- Why does my phone app not see the scanner?
- The phone and printer need to be on the same wifi network, and the printer's mobile scanning feature usually needs to be enabled in its settings first.
